A Guide to Mapping Out Your Key Action Items
Writing down the goals you have your heart set on is one thing. But, executing a plan that will lead you to achieving them is another. Outlining key action items is an effective step in achieving your goals. Not only does it help break down your big goals into manageable tasks. But it also creates clear, measurable checkpoints that will ensure you’re on the right path to success. Want to give your goals their best chance? Continue reading for the know how.
Step 1: Start with your goal
Define your goal clearly:
This is an easy place to start assuming you already have a goal set out. But before moving on, you should ensure that your goal is well defined and follows the S.M.A.R.T. framework. This will provide the context that your action items will be grounded in.
Step 2: Break down your goal
Identify major milestones:
Dividing your goal into significant phases or milestones will allow you to celebrate major achievements along the way and signify the progress you’ve made.
List major tasks:
For each milestone, list the major tasks required to achieve it. These high-level tasks will contribute to the milestone.
Step 3: Develop detailed action items
Subdivide Major Tasks:
The next step is to break down each major task into smaller, actionable steps. These should be specific, tangible actions that are easy to understand and execute.
Ensure Clarity and Specificity:
Each action item should be clear and specific. For example, instead of saying “Exercise more frequently,” specify “Complete one 30 minute exercise session every Monday, Wednesday & Friday.”
Step 4: Prioritize Your Action Items
Order by Importance:
Arrange your action items based on their importance and urgency. Focus on tasks that have the most significant impact or are prerequisites for other tasks.
Create a Sequence:
Determine the logical order for completing tasks. Some tasks may need to be completed before others can start.
Step 5: Develop a Timeline
Include Deadlines/Timeframes:
Setting deadlines for each action item ensures that they are timely completed. Don’t sabotage your success by prolonging your timelines unnecessarily.
Step 6: Review & Adjust
Check in Regularly:
Every so often, take some time to review your action items to ensure you’re on track. Make adjustments based on progress, obstacles, or changes in your priorities.
